Multiple: I think you mean narcotics, which are a class of very potent analgesic drugs.  Common side-effects include constipation, nausea, itching, somnolence, rash, urinary retention.  Serious side effects would include respiratory depression and arrest (think of all those rock stars that died from heroin overdoses) and lowering of the blood pressure.  Addiction potential is also very high.

Minimal: If one takes pain medication appropriately the dosage should not cause a stupor or narcosis. If you take more than the prescribed dose you will have a significantly increased risk of narcosis.

Don't do it: This is a new high for young people, who spray it down their lungs. As a pathologist, i've autopsied several "huffing" deaths from people spraying stuff into their lungs, driving out the oxygen and/or freezing their airways fatally. Ethylene chloride's probably like the others. If u die this way, everybody will make fun of u and u'll miss many opportunities life has to offer. Cherish life, man.

Carbon dioxide...: Normally, the lungs allow you to inhale oxygen and exhale carbon dioxide. With copd, the lungs are diseased and, as the disease progresses, the patient cannot do this as efficiently,  resulting in an increased carbon dioxide level ( when it can't be exhaled!). This increased carbon dioxide level has a similar effect on the brain as narcotics do so it is dubbed "carbon dioxide narcosis".

Not a lot: But it is a psychiatric treatment where instead of using shock treatment or medication or therapy they put a person into a deep sleep for a period of weeks. Maybe one of the psychiatrists can tell you more

The main issues: With hemachromatosis are usually endocrine (glandular), especially diabetes, erectile dysfunction (gonads) and even pituitary insufficiency.  I don't associate it with avascular necrosis.

See below: It is a useful aid to prevent intubation and ventilation in cases where the patient is very sedated. However, i would not use it as a bridge going the other way. I would allow the narcotics to clear before extubating your uncle.
