what is a good sleep medicine for narcolepsy?

Depends: In order to stay awake during the day we often use stimulants and stimulants like medications including provigil, nuvigil, Ritalin (methylphenidate) ... Recently, we are able to use xyrem to help patients sleep deeper and are more rested.  There are medication for cataplexy too.

i need a refill for c2 drug i take for narcolepsy but the prescriber at my dr office wasnt there thursday or friday, i spoke to the staff, let them know it was an emergencyno response. i cant work without it is there anything else i can do?

: State Medical Boards require docs to have backup when emergencies arise, but some would not consider this one. Patients are expected to keep track of their meds and give their docs a few days lead time for C2 drug refills. The same medical board can restrict or revoke a docs license if they prescribe anything to a patient they do not know for conditions they cannot verify.

are there ways to treat narcolepsy for a recovering alcoholic and drug addict? i am both, and taking amphetamines is not an option.

Usually stimulants: Usually stimulants are used for narcolepsy. I suggest making sure that this is your diagnosis. See your primary care physician first, to make sure it is nothing else. Your doctor will refer you to a sleep specialist if needed.

Please repost: Your post leaves out many important details: 1) Where, how &amp; by whom was your narcolepsy diagnosed? Is it a firm diagnosis? 2) Is your “doc” a neurologist? Is he/she a specialist in sleep disorders? Based at an academic medical center? 3) Have any nonpharmacological measures been tried? 4) When nothing works, you need to be sure the diagnosis is correct. Have you sought a 2nd opinion?

: First it is important to confirm that the sleep issue is truly narcolepsy, and HLA testing and overnight sleep studies are advised if not previously done.  And yes, several newer drugs are now available.  Suggest you see a neurologist who specializes in sleep disorders.

Yes: Up to 10% of narcolepsy patients have family members with the illness.  Twins have an even higher chance of both having the illness.

Not usually : Usually we can control daytime sleepiness and cataplexy with meds. Most narcoleptics don't need disability.
