Rarely: One can differ the two but it would be unusual for one to make the effort.  Most tests simply screen for THC.

Doubtful: Unless you have a legitimate medical condition, it would be unlikely that you could get a prescription for marinol.  This, of course, is if you go to an ethical doctor.  Unfortunately, there are too many doctors (many seem to be located in florida) that will prescribe any medication for anyone as long as they are willing to pay.  The good news is that the dea is closing these practices down!

From marijuana: There isn't anything unusual about Marinol besides the fact that it is derived from marijuana. It is a prescription for those having significant anorexia/wt loss from illnesses such as HIV and cancers. Marijuana is still illegal in most states.

Synthetic vs whole: Marinol is the active ingredient of marijuana and it is used to treat anorexia/wt loss problems in patients with hiv/cancers etc...It is in its pure/active form. Whole-marijuana has this compound along with many many other substances. Also a big different is marijuana is still illegal in most states. Be good and good luck.

Not advised.: Marinol is not indicated for mental health problems.  The main reasons it is used is for aids or cancer related loss of appetite.  It is also used to counteract nausea/vomiting related to chemotherapy.

Probably increase: I would expect Marinol to increase your appetite and in fact this medication has an fda indication for anorexia in aids patients and as a treatment for nausea and vomiting in patients receiving chemotherapy for the treatment of oncological conditions.  Stay safe!
