Allergy or side -: Allergy or side effect? Rash, hives, facial swelling-these are manifestations if allergy! Low white count, gastric issues, and hepatitis are examples of potentially serious side effects. This drug should be prescribed by only a handful of specialists who use it frequently!

If?: It can lower platelets.  If liver problems (hepatitis occurs, lower fibrinogen levels occur and can also cause bleeding.  Low platelet counts are more likely.

Accepted Answer

Methotrexate cheaper: Generic Methotrexate is very inexpensive.  If you get name brand pills it's more, but generic version of Arava (leflunomide) is more expensive than Methotrexate and Arava is the most expensive.  In my experience, Methotrexate works better and has less frequent dosing (weekly instead of daily). I only use Leflunomide (arava) if Methotrexate can't be used for some reason. Side effects are similar.

Ideally No: Leflunomide is used in rheumatoid arthritis.  It can cause fetal birth defects.  Generally we want to get you off of this medication prior to pregnancy.  You should talk to your doctor before coming off of any medication however.

Yes!: It vis what I use next after s.C. Methotrexate, inn most situations where the drug is important!  it is potentially more toxic (liver), but appropriate monitoring should minimize any risk.  It is a potent and good anti-inflamatory drug.

Common combination: In rheumatoid arthritis Prednisone is given with a variety of other  medication during therapy. We try to taper  people off Prednisone because  of its  long term risks and side effects. Each medication has side effects including some of these: risk of  infection, bone loss, osteoporosis, cataracts, weight gain with Prednisone and blood count and liver test with (leflunomide) generic name of arava.

See below: You must stop before surgery and you can resume it until you are cleared the surgeon performing surgery because it can put you at increased risk for post-surgerical infections.

: This will depend on how fast YOUR OWN body metabolizes med &amp; other meds you may be on &amp; other disease you may have.  I would go to Drugs.com, look at the specific version of it you are taking &amp; look for its metabolic 1/2 life which is how long it take for 1/2 of the medicine to made inactive or excreted in urine or bowel. Also enter all other meds u r taking 4 interactions . Then discuss with Dr.
