There are other medications out there depending on the strain of virus you have.

Different rx schedules.  Both have improved success rates.

Define casual: If you have had intercourse, shared a razor or toothbrush, or other activity that would exchange blood and bodily fluids then yes.  If you are just acquaintances but no intimate contact, then no.

Yes: We've been able to cure hepatitis c for several years now, but the treatments were difficult.  Two new drugs approved in the last month make it much easier.  However, each must currently be taken with interferon, so at best, you have to put up with interferon side effects for 3 months.  In the fall of 2014, we may have regimens that don't require interferon.

Yeah! 2 new ones: 2 new drugs, protease inhibitor-type drugs approved.  Added to the standard interferon/ribavirin rx. Different dose schedules.  Big help in improving response rates, even in prior relapsers and nonresponders to rx; might decrease duration of rx.

Yes: Your brother has many medical co-morbidities that will make almost any medical problem in him worse and more difficult to treat.  He needs to be under the care of a doctor, closely.
