Depends: Elavil (amitriptyline) can interact with several other meds such that even a low dose can be toxic and some people don't metabolize well.  You should discuss with your prescriber your concerns.  If thinking of a suicide plan, tell them as well.  It's not a pleasant nor sure thing and other help is available if this isn't working.

Elavil (amitriptyline): Talk with your doctor about other alternatives such as another Tricyclic antidepressant Pamelor or Norpramine, or a mood stabilizer such as Topamax, (topiramate) all with minimum wt. gain side-effect.

Most likely: Since they attack "nerve" pain by different mechanisms then there is a potential for additive benefit. They are often used in combination for that purpose.

Keep in mind that medications like this do not work right away, so if you can tolerate as they "get into your system" over the course of a few weeks you will be able to see if they truly work for you.

i was put on elavil (amitriptyline) for interstitial cystitis but i read that it causes retention. why would i be on this medicine then?

Elavil (amitriptyline) is a common: Treatment tried for ic.  At the doses used and at your age, urinary retention would be very unlikely.  Try it - it is sometimes very helpful.

Elavil (amitriptyline): has mostly anticholinergic side effects (dry mouth, constipation, elevated heart rate) just the opposite of parasympathetic.  The calming effect is due to a much more complex interaction of excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters further up stream (cortex and deep gray matter structures like the thalamus, the hypopithalamus, putamen, globus pallidus, nucleus accumbens, ventral tegmental area.)
