is the 12 step program for eating disorders similar to the 12 step program for alcoholics/drug users?

Mostly: They are similar in the recognition that one feels powerless over the addiction, that a higher power (understood as god, or the 12-step fellowship, or something else) is needed to help, and in working the "12 steps".  Obviously one can abstain from alcohol or recreational drugs, but not from food, so there are important differences too.

on www.drugs.com it says not to take wellbutrin (bupropion) if you have an eating disorder. why?

SEIZURE RISK: The problem with wellbutrin (bupropion) and an eating disorder is primarily with anorexia. The concern is that wellbutrin (bupropion) can lower the seizure threshold and when some is anorexic they may be purging and have their electrolytes all out of whack which can lead to seizures. So there is now a double whammy for a seizure. Otherwise wellbutrin (bupropion) is a fairly safe medication with few side effects. Sr and xl safer form.

i've been struggling very badly with binge eating and it's cause me to become depressed . my doctor says i have a binge eating disorder but she precribed me lexapro. do you think this is the right medicine for my problem?

Good choice: EAting disorder is a complicated problem and one aspect of treatment includes management of depression with medication as well as counseling. First line medications are SSRI Meds, which help to break the cycle of repetetive thoughts.  Lexapro has less side effects than some of the other SSRI drugs, so stick with it.  Medication takes time to work and may need dose adjustment.

Eating disorder ?'s: See your regular physician for a discussion and prescription (if necessary).  Generally you do not need a psychiatrist for treatment unless your health condition has deteriorated.

Rewarding: At some point, all maladaptive behavior that is maintained was reinforced/rewarded.  Be it a reward of removing something painful (e..G, feeling out of control & exerting control not eating; removing guilt from binging through purging) or adding something pleasurable (e.g., receive complements for loss of weight).  Nearly all behavior results from genetics + environment + experience + reward.

Several signs: Evidence of binging, restricting or purging: including but not limited to rapid weight gain or loss, eating large quantities of food, eating small quantities of food, non-prescribed use of laxatives or diuretics, excessive exercise, obsession with food or weight.
