Not that I'm aware: Hi. Spironolactone (Aldactone) blocks the aldosterone and testosterone receptors, but I'm not aware of any inhibition of the Progesterone receptor.

Medications: The brand names of some of the medications that you list are not known in the USA. Once again, would suggest that your pharmacist should have a computerized program that lists all drug interactions and therefore should be able to help you out. Sorry, hope this helps.

It depends: it depends on why you're taking spironolactone (Aldactone). Suggest low potassium diet - especially avoid tomatoes, potatoes, bananas and orange juice (or V8 juice).  Some people take an additional diuretic to lower potassium but these drugs have other side effects.

are there any drug interactions with luvox (fluvoxamine) and spironolactone?

Accepted Answer

Possible: Possible, may not be common. Luvox (fluvoxamine) occasionally can cause low sodium levels in the blood, and spirono-lactone can make low sodium worse.  Symptoms of low sodium can be mild like nausea, but can include lethargy, confusion, muscle spasm, weakness or unsteadiness. If you have these symptoms you should have a blood test for electrolytes.

which drug is more effective for aldosterone issues, spironolactone or eplerenone and why?

Minor differences: They both block aldosterone. Eplerenone is more expensive but it doesn't cause testosterone suppression. Spironolactone block aldosterone and testosterone so there is more side effects with this med. Pt on high dose spironolactone (more than 150 mg) has higher chance of developing gynecomastia.  Due to cost, Aldactone is normally tried first, if there is side effect, then Eplerenone is used.

what is unique/ why about taking bp medicine every 24 hrs. my bp seems to be controlled well avge 103/68. can i take spironolactone 25 mg every 48 hrs?

Discuss with doctor: Best to discuss with your treating doctor.  For my patients whose blood pressure is well controlled, we do try sometimes to slowly reduce their dose of medication and see how they do.  Not unreasonable to try, just not on your own. To go further, it is important to rethink and reassess what may be your final goals to what stage of MTF; then decide what may be your further efforts which you would like to cope with so to fit your realistic personal/social readjustment. See below: Spironolactone is a pottassium sparing diuretic. A diuretic is a medication which enhances fluid and salt excretion from the kidney. Spironolactone is a weak diuretic and is used because it does not require pottassium supplementation unlike other diueretics. It is also used to treat high blood pressure and heart problems.

one of the side effects of spironolactone is  vaginal post-menopausal bleeding. what causes this? will stopping medicine reverse abnormal bleeding?

Yes, it should: Spironolactone changes the balance of hormones that cause menstrual bleeding.  If spironolactone is the cause, then bleeding will stop when you stop taking the medication.  Post-menopausal bleeding can be caused by endometrial hyperplasia (pre-cancer of the uterus) or uterine cancer, which is rare at age 34.  Please inform your doctor of the bleeding.

Diabetes and meds: Adding spironolactone to a regimen that includes maximal ace inhibition improves renoprotection (r) in patients with diabetic nephropathy. Diovan (valsartan) is also a r agent as it lowers both blood pressure and protein in the urine of patients with diabetes. The other drugs have no r protect effect in diabetes, other than lowering blood pressure. Speak to your physician for more information in your case.
