Holistic Approach: Good nutrition & sleep.  Exercise, yoga, tai chi, & meditation (especially the mindfulness variety) are all good. Avoid caffeine, nicotine, and substances of abuse.  Expect some discomfort at first.  Enlist the advise of a physical therapist or a neuro-rehab specialist.

A complex condition: A chronic pain condition that is believed to be the result of dysfunction in the central or peripheral nervous systems and abnormal excitation of nervous tissue, leading to abnormal impulses along nerves that affect blood vessels and skin. This can be acquired after minor trauma or surgery. It can be treated my a pain specialist, the sooner the better.

Therapy: For rsd or crps it is important to go through desensitization  therapy where the therapists uses various touch modalities to teach your sensory system to feel normal again.  Sympathetic blocks help better earlier in the disease process.  Medications like membrane stabilizers (gabapentin) and some antidepressants may help.  Spinal cord stimulation may help as a last resort.  I hope you get better.

Yes: Rsd can occur after a previous traumatic injury in predisposed people.  For example, the patient may have sustained a previous fracture or sprain that seems as though it never heals.  On closer examination, the pain from the initial injury has improved but another has taken its place-namely rsd.

Many things: Rsd, now called complex regional pain syndrome (crps), can be caused by minor trauma (one of my patients was opening a box when he developed crps in his hand), fracture, other major trauma, brain injury, spinal cord injury, stroke, surgery, nerve compression and inadvertent needle placement injuring a nerve. It can be treated conservatively. See your doctor for referral to a good pain specialist.

Several possiblities: Rsd is a complex disorder which is really poorly understood. As a pain doctor, i've seen quite a few rsd patients. Some respond to meds, some to osteopathic manipulation. Quite a few respond to topical or ingested medical marijuana. If legal in your state, it could prove quite helpful to try. Consult an osteopathic doc for a hands-on diagnosis to see if manipulation could be part of your treatment.

Pain: Typically rsd or as it is known, chronic regional pain syndrome. Will start in an extremity following painful trauma or other stimulus. If the pain initaially is not treated properly and sometimes even if treated appropriately it is nerves in that extremity  changing and developing local nerve pain that can be hard to control but is better if treated aggressively and early to prevent progression.

Intense nerve pain: Reflex sympathetic dystrophy is renamed to complex regional pain syndrome to acurately reflect the localized nature of this illness. It is often result of trauma to the area injurying the nerve which healed abnormally and thus becomes hypersenstive. It can be severe and disabling for some, but i don't believe it is generally regarded as catastrophic. Consult doc if u r having trouble. Good luck.

Rds develops from this myofascial dz. Early therapy is the key with myofascial release therapy with massage, tissue therapy, trigger pt injs w Lidocaine and acupuncture.
