what s the difference between zomig (zolmitriptan) and maxalt?

Both triptans: Each might stop a migraine if taken within the first 60-90 mins of headache onset, and both have a brief half-life, about 3-4 hrs.  Maxalt comes as tablet or mlt which can dissolve in mouth.  Zomig (zolmitriptan) available as nasal spray, which may resolve headache within 15 min, but tablet and zmt dissolving forms are both available.  Might use one or other based on results.

have tried imitrix/maxalt/zomig for infreq. migraines (no help). disclofenac helps some with pain, but i get rebound. neg mri. what else can i try?

Few more: Injectable imitrex, (sumatriptan) cafergot, exedrine migraine and fioricer are also effective in many cases. If you are more than 4 days out of a month in headache then preventative medications are more appropriate

animal reproduction studies have shown an adverse effect on the fetus and there are no adequate and well-controlled studies in humans, but potential benefits may warrant use of the drug in pregnant women despite potential risks.

Yes, Maxalt is 4 a: - migraines while Flexeril is a muscle relaxant. Not any conflicts that I can see.

Yes: There are no significant interactions between Amoxicillin (an antibiotic) and Maxalt (rizatriptan) (a triptan-type migraine medication).

Accepted Answer

No: Rizatriptan (Maxalt (rizatriptan)) has not been shown to be safe in pregnancy and is likely to pose a risk to the fetus but has not been well-studied.  Acetaminophen (Tylenol) is considered safe in pregnancy, and along with rest in a dark, quiet room is the best way to treat a migraine in pregnancy.  In unusual, severe circumstances Maxalt (rizatriptan) could be prescribed by a rather bold physician, but I wouldn't.

For migraine...: ...there are theories that the trigeminal nerve is involved.  Maxalt (rizatriptan) works to decrease and stop abnormal firing and release of certain chemicals that cause the migraine pain.  For the more typical trigeminal disease, trigeminal neuralgia, Maxalt (rizatriptan) does not have any effect because the mechanism of pain is different.  Good question!

Yes, but: More than 2 doses of each on the same day has not been well studied. Funny thing about this is there is an upper limit on daily dose of each drug per fda, but no upper limit on combination.  We really don't know effect of 4 doses.  They do work on the same body system and should have additive effect if dosed together. Keep that in mind when you make decision about how much to take in the same day.

Yes, but : Maxalt (rizatriptan) is a triptan, and may elevate your blood pressure for about 3-4 hrs, while effect is present.  Therefore, make certain that your BP meds are adequate.  The metformin should be of no concern as will not be affected by the maxalt (rizatriptan).

Don't take both: Both are same class of drugs.Only one should be taken out of two.
