It is different: Unlike natural breast tissue, saline implants do not flatten and move to the side as readily. Consequently, there may always be a feeling of an object between the chest and the mattress. This is, however, not a major complaint from most women who have breast implants.

Breast reconstruction: Silicone implants are FDA approved for breast reconstruction.  They are the most tissue like of the implant based reconstructions.  Implant reconstruction is the most common form of reconstruction performed in the US.

No I have not: But a patient wanting a larger breast implant is not uncommon.  It is best to discuss this with the surgeon who placed the original implants.  He would be the best to recommend whether he thinks you would be a candidate for this or not.  It may require tissue expanders to stretch the skin more before going to a larger implant.

do they ever send you home same day after mastectomy and implant ? i'm seeing a lot of stories about that ? more likely if i have medicaid ?

Not insurance based!: The operative surgeon decides whether the patient can tolerate an outpatient procedure or not.  Staying inpatient or overnight after procedures is not decided directly because of medicaid or other insurances.  However, some insurances don't cover the procedure itself and its up to the patient to pay for the procedure out of pocket.  It's surgeon, patient and procedure dependent.

my prophylactic, bilateral  mastectomy with immediate reconstruction...with implants, has developed severe swelling on left side. could it be fluid?

Accepted Answer

Yes possible seroma : Yes, it could be a possible seroma or hematoma. Usually drains will help to minimize this but not completely prevent it. It amy require treatment with drainage and/or antibiotics. Discuss with your reconstructive surgeon asap.

my saline implant 5 years after mastectomy  is flat  and smaller.  could it have popped or leaked or could this be a medical issue? what should  i do?

Yes: It could have leaked, or popped, and that is not a medical emergency- just a plastic surgery issue. You may  need new implants. See your plastic surgeon.
