Yes: I am not sure exactly what you mean but i consider all masses dangerous until proven otherwise.  If you are talking of surgery, i believe everyone is important so every procedure is major.  You should get peace after talking to your surgeon and if not consider second opinions.

my girlfriend has a large cancerous mass sitting in her chest and its putting pressure on her heart and lungs.  any idea what type cancer this is?

You need to ask her: If this is your girlfriend and she's seriously sick, she's been informed of the nature of her cancer and if a diagnosis has not yet been made, it will be in a day or so, probably by needle biopsy. This is the era of patient privacy and you'll need to ask her what the diagnosis is.

Extremely serious: Even in your brief description, you mention 2 worrisome features: size and proximity to the aorta.  It's beyond the scope of this forum to speculate on his prognosis, but i think you're aware that your father is in trouble. Talk with his oncologist. There are several types of lung cancer and some are more sensitive to chemotherapy or radiation. Best of luck.

What kind of hernia?: It depends on the location of the hernia and what kind of surgery was done. Surgery for a hiatal hernia or diaphragmatic hernia may cause scar near the heart. But even this should not lead to a mass between the heart and lung.

Pulmonologist: I feel that you may have sarcoidosis and should be evaluated by a pulmonologist so that an accurate diagnosis will be made  through appropriate testing and proper treatment will be obtained.

Rib pain: The ribs and sternum have joints that can become inflamed.  Chronic inflammation of the costosternal joint can be from wear and tear or due to an autoimmune disease called tietze syndrome.

Depends...: Murmurs are a sound made by turbulent flow across the valves, or a hole in the dividing septum between the ventricles, or rarely a small tube that stays open which should have closed at birth, the ductus arteriosus.  Symptoms could include shortness of breath or swelling in your feet if they are bad, but should not cause chest pain.  Get an echocardiogram and see a cardiologist.

Diet & exercise: Attain and maintain normal weight. Follow a vegetarian or mediterranean diet. Exercise 30 minutes or more daily. Don't smoke. Wear your seatbelt. If you own a firearm, keep it locked.  Get enough sleep. Keep a cheerful outlook.Stay involved in activities you enjoy and find meaningful. If you're so inclined, help others do the same.
