so i have contracted lice for the first time. due to allergies my dr and pharmacy said dont use the otc stuff. dr called in malathion 0.5% my insurance will not cover it and its 300.00 dollars. i cant afford that. what else can i do??

: I would contact your doc and see if they are comfortable prescribing Ivermectin. This is not commonly used for this purpose but a single dose repeated in 10 days has been shown to be effective in eliminating lice. The drugs has been approved for human use for more than 45 years but has few uses.

Organophospate toxin: Don’t swallow or get Malathion in nose, ears, mouth, vagina, or eyes. Protect eyes. If Malathion accidentally comes in contact with eyes, flush them with water to reduce irritation. If irritation continues or you experience vision changes, talk to your doctor. This medication contains an ingredient that could easily catch fire (flammable). Don’t use Malathion on newborns or infants.

Tricky: Medication reactions can be tricky as the type of reaction can be intolerance vs allergic.  Avoidance is the best treatment for a drug allergy and using a suitable alternative.  In a life threatening circumstance, desensitization by an allergist in the hospital is an option.  Sometimes drug allergy can resolve over time such as penicillin.  An allergist can assist in a good long term plan.

Maybe: There are some allergies that resolve as you grow older. For instance some people can get improvement in their response to certain medications as they get older, or further away from the initial exposure. This may be due to a calming of the inflammatory response as you age. However, if you were my patient i would not give you a medication that you were allergic to as the risk is too high.
