: Because Magnesium does not act alone, I would recommend a combination formula containing Magnesium, Calcium and Potassium. These formula's typically contain a standardized dosage such as 500/500/100. It may take several weeks before the full effect is noticed. Magnesium will cause a laxative effect, causing loose stools or more frequent stools.

: I'm under the impression that the advantage of the glycinate  is less propensity to cause diarrhea but no difference as a sleep aid. Both forms can suppress muscle cramps and act on nervous system regulation.

YES!: Magnesium is an essential nutrient and we need it every day. It is safe ; non-toxic. If you take too much (esp. A poorly absorbed form) it can cause loose stools. Probably OK: But check with your PCP.  Magnesium can help relax muscles of mastication during sleep. I would also suggest to combine with a soft thermoplastic mandibular nightguard.

Interesting: Magnesium is supposed to be relaxing. It is possible that you are low enough that low magnesium is hindering your metabolism and when you take some this normalize. You may have other deficiencies. I am just guessing. Hard to really tell without doing a full orthomolecular workup on you.

Mental Health: All medications that affect the brain can cause paradoxical effects in some humans.  There dis no answer as to 'why'. This just is in some humans and they do not or should not be using the medications if they have a paradoxical or unexpected reaction.

Please Clarify: Do you mean "melatonin" and not magnesium? I have never once in my life heard of magnesium being used for sleep.

RLS: Rls can disrupt sleep and if a medicine at low dose works then doesnt matter what time you take it.

Actually, none: rather observe sleep hygiene , cool quiet dark bedroom, no exercise or caffeinated beverages in the evening, avoid TV, pc, phones or smart phones one hour before retiring. Treats deficiency: I'm not sure magnesium will help someone  sleep if they have sufficient magnesium, but only 32% of americans get adequate magnesium in their diets. Magnesium deficiency is widespread not only due to lack in diet but alcohol. Stress ; many drugs cause magnesium depletion.
