Magnesium deficiency: Magnesium deficiency can happen temporarily with intestinal viruses that cause vomiting and diarrhea.  Also, GI diseases like irritable bowel syndrome and ulcerative colitis, diabetes, and pancreatitis; hyperthyroidism, kidney disease, and taking diuretics can lead to deficiencies. So can too much coffee, soda, salt, or alcohol;  heavy menstrual periods, excessive sweating, and prolonged stress.
