Various herbals: Garlic is my favorite except you'll smell like a great italian! I use a clove three times daily - slice it up and eat a small slice with each bite of your meal or it will be too hot - do this for 2-3 days and avoid the whole cold issue as it's antiviral and antibacterial. Zinc lozenges are also helpful as is olive leaf extract, and higher doses of vit c 1000mg 2-3 times daily.

Some thoughts...: New throat pain can be from a strep throat infection (antibiotics needed), a cold or influenza (antibiotics usually not used), or from some other cause such as allergies or irritants. Usually, a person sees the doctor if the sore throat is bothersome, recurrent, or doesn't go away quickly (mainly to look for strep). Throat lozenges and Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Motrin (ibuprofen) may lessen pain.

A : A sore throat is a pretty non-specific complaint that can have many causes.  Most commonly, it is caused by a virus and really shouldn't last more than a few days.  A sore throat that persists could be something more serious such as a chronic infection, gastroesophageal reflux disease, and in rare cases, even cancer (especially if you smoke, drink or have been exposed to the hpv virus).  Because of this, it is important that you see your doctor or an otolaryngologist (ear nose and throat specialist) to find the cause of your sore throat so it can be properly and effectively treated.

Possibly: Gonorrhea can unfortunately also be in the throat if your partner also performed oral sex as well on you. He might want to have throat cultured to be sure but he should definitely be treated as well.

Check for Fever: Best is to make sure of no fever.
If prolonged see MD for exam and throat culture.
  Take no hot foods
   Chicken soup
Lemon lime lozenges
Fluids like water
No smoking or alcohol.

Perhaps: For significant sore throat with swollen tonsils / lymph nodes –  see physician & get a strep throat test/ culture. If you have strep throat, antibiotic therapy is imperative to prevent future complications. Saltwater gargles: mix 1 tsp salt in 8 oz warm water – gargle several times a day. Or gargle with aloe vera juice twice a day.  Add honey & a small amt. Of lemon juice to chamomile tea.

Low Humidity: Gargle with good mouth wash twice daily. Make sure the humidity at home and work is above 50%. Zyrtec (cetirizine) 10 mg at night for 3 weeks will also help.

Symptomatic relief: Warm water gargles loosens the muscles of the throat and make it easier to swallow. It does not address the cause of sore throat.
For good health - Have a diet rich in fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains, milk and milk products, nuts, beans, legumes, lentils and small amounts of lean meats. Avoid saturated fats. Exercise at least 150 minutes/week and increase the intensity of exercise gradually. Do not use tobacco, alcohol, weed or street drugs in any form. 
Practice safe sex.
