can there be a permanent solution to lymphedema?

Not likely: Unfortunately, lymphedema is a chronic lifelong problem that can be controlled but probably never cured.  There are some new micro surgical techniques that are showing some promise but they aren't a cure either.  They are simply an additional treatment tool.

Unfortunately, no...: ...However, many people with lymphedema will benefit greatly by the use of physical therapy.  I recommend you seek out a referral to a physical therapist trained in lymphatic drainage.

YEs: There are several medical specialties that  focus on lympedema. In order of frequency:  vascular medicine specialist, vein specialist also called phlebologist , vascular surgeons, dermatology, cardiology and family practice focus on  lymphedema in their practices. All of these  specialties  diagnose and treat lymphedema, but there is no single specialty that diagnosis or treats lymphedema.

what kind of specialist should i seek if i have a lymphedema problem?

Depending on...: Where you live, either seeing a podiatrist or cardiologist who specializes in venous disease would be a good place to start.  If it affects the lower legs, it could be from chronic venous insufficiency and not so much lymphedema.  If you recently had surgery or a mastectomy from breast cancer, then lymphedema is the working problem.  Treatment is compression with a pneumatic compression pump.

Not as a first step: The mainstay of treatment for lymphedema is still conservative.  This includes weight control, stretching exercises,  lymphatic drainage massage, wearing compression garments, and possibly using sequential compression devices.  If that is unsuccessful, surgery can be discussed at that point but i would not recommend it as a first step.

Tough question: There are few proven surgical options for lymphedema. If your lymphedema is preventing you from achieving a dream, seek out a dedicated lymphedema specialist and tell them your concerns.

See a specialist: Lymphedema nurse specialists can be unbelievably helpful in providing emotional support and counseling, education about skin care, and also in providing treatment for lymphedema with massage and wrapping techniques. Even chronic, massively swollen limbs can see dramatic results with non-invasive limb reduction techniques.

Excess fluid: There are 2 circulation systems in the body, the vascular, arteries and veins, and the lymphatic.  Fluid leaks out of the veins slowly all day long, and it should be picked up by the lymph circulation, and returned to the vascular system.  The immune system also uses the lymphatic circulation to move infection fighting cells.  Damage causes the fluid to back up, and causes swelling.
