What to ask: In general, accredited labs must validate the performance characteristics for tests they offer. That can be hard for a dx like Lyme where there are few definite criteria and many vague symptoms. Antibody testing is very sensitive, but antibodies themselves cross-react. The most sensitive and specific tests aim to detect DNA specific to the organism. Ask the lab for the performance profile of test.

: Diagnosing Lyme disease is quite complex. In North America, Lyme is uncommon this time of year. Positive IgM antibody for Borrelia burdorferi (the cause of Lyme) can help in diagnosis, but isn't the only test. Unless her doctors are highly experienced with Lyme, ask for consultation with an infectious diseases specialist. Good luck to her.

Wrong test: Antibody tests are unreliable for lyme disease.  Western blot test should be performed.
Also, leg pain not normally a symptom of lyme.

how long do antibodies remain detectable in the blood? i had a clear elisa for lyme disease after recurring lightheadedness and brain fog after a possible bite when hiking in the uk but the test was a good 10 months later -would it still be reliable?

Some antibodies: last for years and some others (such as chicken pox) last a lifetime.....It is VERY unlikely that you had a Lyme exposure if the tests are negative in 10 months!

Lyme disease: Check out http://www.Cdc.Gov/lyme/ & http://www.Mayoclinic.Com/health/lyme-disease/ds00116 for info on lyme disease. Yes, there is lab testing available but we don't usually recommend it unless we're highly suspicious. You'll need to wait a few weeks to allow your body to develop antibodies against the bacteria in order for tests to turn positive.

Often: It really depends on the specific neurologic symptoms but often IV Rocephin (ceftriaxone) is needed as oral antibiotics do not cross the blood-brain barrier.

i have huge breastpain. period late for 6 days. why? i took 3 pregnancy tests, all negative. i use 200mg antibiotics for 17 days now (lyme disease).

See doctor: While breast pain can be associated with the time period before one's period starts due to effects of progesterone on the breast tissue, it sounds like your pain is excessive and difficult to live with.  You likely aren't pregnant given 3 negative tests. I would see a doctor to get a full breast exam to make sure there is nothing concerning. Doctor may order an ultrasound to examine the breast.
