Not very accurate!: Lyme testing leaves a lot to be desired. The screening AB via ELISA misses at least HALF of all cases. The Western Blot is a better test and should be done even if the AB test is negative, but most labs do inadequate tests; the best is by IgeneX but even that may miss over 20% of cases! see details: It is a test for lyme disease. A positive screen alone is not diagnostic. It needs to be confirmed by the western blot test which actually tests for specific antibodies related to the lyme organism.

Yes,positive 20+ yrs: Research suggests igg antibodies can persist at least 20 years after infection. While igm antibodies appear first, unlike other infections they often persist ; are a good indicator of persistent infection. One may have chronic lyme with or without persistence of igg antibodies. Chronic lyme is difficult to fully eradicate ; no current test proves that it is no longer present in your body!

Complex: The diagnosis of lyme disease is usually on a clinical basis.  Serologic testing should not be done for screening purposes.  False positive results are very frequent in patients with autoimmune diseases, particularly rheumatoid arthritis, and particularly when these are IgM antibodies.

Then it's not Lyme: Lyme disease can be tricky -and you want to make sure you see someone like an Infectious Diseases doctor who knows how to treat it. The diagnosis is actually based on clinical findings, and the lab testing is generally 'supportive'. Since you're Western blot is negative, then it's very unlikely you have Lyme. There are other diseases that could cause 'Lyme-like' symptoms -and good to get evaluated
