i have lupus (nephritis-kidney), is it harmful to eat beets?

Possibly: Lupus nephritis can lead to chronic kidney disease (an elevated creatinine on your bloodtest). If you have ckd, then beets are bad for you.  Beets have a high amount of potassium so people with CKD can not eliminate that excess potassium. High potassium in the body can lead to cardiac issues.  Therefore avoid beets if your lupus nephritis caused chronic kidney disease.

In : In general there aren't any good or bad foods for patients with lupus different from what we recommend to anybody who wishes to stay healthy. Recent research has shown that foods rich in  Folic Acid or taking Folic Acid supplements can help . Since patients with lupus have an increase risk for heart disease and atherosclerosis the recomendations are to eat a low cholesterol low fat diet, watch the salt content  to maintain normal blood pressure, eat a variety of fresh  fruit and vegetables and maintain a balance proportion of protein , carbs and fat in your diet.

Needs immediate care: If he is having fevers and losing weight this is extremely serious. He needs to be under close supervision of a rheumatologist. If he is already seeing one, have him call that doctor immediately and explain his issues. If he does not, go to the er. Fevers may be secondary to lupus but they may also be related to a serious infection especially if your brother is on a cortisone med. Do not delay.
