59 year old female. no history of smoking, lung cancer, lung problems. both nostrils are a little bloody when i blow my nose for the past 3 days. no cough, pain, fever or other symptoms. there weather has gotten cold a few days ago.cause for concern?

Humidifier: A humidifier may help to keep passages moist and less inflamed. If the bleeding is scant and related to blowing your nose, it is most likely that small vessels of the nose are the source. Watch for sputum, mixed with blood or cough with blood. If these occur, please see your Pulmonary specialist right away. Place a cool compress on your nasal bridge.

very good evening doctors. how would i know if occasional blood in my saliva/sputum with no cough at all and no feeling of fever could be a pulmonary/lung cancer problem or a gum/dental issue? i am on plavix 75mg and aspirin 81mg and i have stents?

: Go see your Dentist to evaluate for gum disease. If present, may want to see a bone/gum specialist, a Periodontist. If gums healthy, see your GP.

no pleural mass in chest ct scan,clear  pleural exudate (lab results say it is exudate not transudate).no fever or cough. can we rule out lung cancer?

Not enough info....: With the information provided, lung cancer cannot be ruled out. Need to know if any mass or abnormality was seen on the chest CT scan. An exudative pleural effusion could be due to many things including pneumonia, cancer, etc. A sample of the fluid should be sent for a variety of cultures as well as looked at for malignant cells. More testing is definitely needed for a diagnosis to be made!

33/m, never smoked. i feel a "cold" sensation in the middle of my throat when inhaling deeply. no cough, no fever, no cold, no chest pain. lungs sound clear, clean cxr (front/lateral). intermittent sob relieved by albuterol, acid reflux. lung cancer?

Symptoms: Suggest asthma or reactive airway disease. While lung cancer cannot be ruled out, does not seem likely in this context. Talk to your treating doc about your worries.

would a chest xray show lung cancer? i had ct of chest nov 2012 and it was clear. i have +ana elevated sed and low grade fevers.up back pain 1 year.

It should: Basic cxr should show a lung cancer of any size.   If there's any change in symptoms, a follow up cxr for comparison might be appropriate. Your ct would have a basic plain film at the outset. All your symptoms and tests are non specific, so keep working with your medical team. Focus on a good healthy lifestyle while work up continues. Good luck.

No: tumors that are not near the bronchial tubes (airways) will not result in bloody sputum!

Accepted Answer

Not necessarily: Coughing up blood ornhemoptysis when associated with lung cancer implies a tumor in one of the major airways usually.  More distally located tumors can hide from detection longer since they may have no symptoms. Most patients that i can help as a surgeon have early stage disease, no symptoms, and their cancer was discovered because of something completely unrelated but warranted a chest x-ray.

what are my chances estimated of lung cancer at 22? i don't smoke or drink.but woke up with a cough and feeling of mucus in chest?

Accepted Answer

Small: Smoking is by far the number one cause of lung cancer. If you haven't smoked, it makes lung cancer less likely. That's not to say nonsmokers dont get lung cancer. Far from it. But it makes it less likely. A cough with mucus is typically a bronchitis. But, if you are concerned then definitely get checked out.

Prob not: Best thing to do is see your doctor if your cough will not go away, doubt it is cancer

had paid and dry cough in rt lung for 2.5 months. had xrays & bloods done. all ok. lft to be done in october. could i have lung cancer. very worried ?

Not too likely: Lung cancer rarely presents in patients of your age, and is even more rare among non-smokers, so your worries are likely overdone.  On the other hand pain and a cough are worrisome for other conditions, and you should see your doctors again if they have not made a diagnosis and treated it.  You say xrays were done, but the best procedure to find a lung cancer or other lung mass is chest ct. Ask.
