Accepted Answer

Cough: Unlikely. These are common symptoms which occur when you quit and the airway is recovering function, ciliary function, recovering from chronic inflammation. Acute phase is three weeks, Subacute phase is 3 months. Drink a lot of water. Best to get a Chest x-ray

Mgt: Among possible causes are infection, malignancy.
I would suggest samples from her airway be sent for testing.
A TB test to rule out TB may be ordered.

Extremely unlikely: SOB that is worse after exercise and relieved with inhalers is likely due to asthma- or "reactive airway disease."

Increased: His risk is about 30x that of someone who has never smoked.  If he continues to smoke, he will have a 1 in 10 chance of developing lung cancer.  It is never too late to stop.  Family, friends, and doctors can have an influence so continue to urge him to stop.

every now and then i find i get breathless doing everyday things. its not everyday. could it be lung cancer?

It's a "human": thing to "think of the worse" case scenario for what may be a simple explanation! You could be anemic, At age 37 you may be "perimenopausal"  Actually cancer would present with a lot more symptoms before it grew large enough to cause breathlessness..(for example COUGH..etc
Talk with your GP (Plan Doctor) about your symptoms and the anxiety you have about it!

Despite the: Tobacco industry diverting attemtion from their products, only smoked tobacco is sufficiently studied to prove causation of lung cancer, and the elements are identified. Other inhaled "drugs", thc and meth, are clearly not "approved" but cancer link is not there.

Stop worrying: I can't promise you don't have a tiny lung cancer. You're a never-smoker, you're young, you have a "slight cough" (been checked for cough-variant asthma?), and most back pain never gets a hard diagnosis. Fretting about one of the least likely diagnoses is doing you no good. If you recognize this as unrealistic, your physician can help you address cancer phobia. Work with ur dr to find real causes.

: Life long smokers have a 1 in 10 chance to develop lung Cancer, so 90% remain free of Cancer. When you stop smoking, the risk of having lung cancer comes down every year.
Having left smoking for 40 yrs reduces your risk close to non-smokers. So you do not need to worry. But remember non-smokers also have a  very small risk of developing lung Cancer, but it is close to less than1%.
