One question: Small cell lung cancer is almost always high-stage when it's discovered and the only question is whether she is a candidate for chemotherapy, which can be expected to make the disease vanish for at least several good months. If this is not possible, it should at least be possible to manage her discomfort; ask a hospice physician.

Odds and percentages are accurate for the group of people with the same disease that came before you, but cannot predict what will happen to an individual. The statistics however can be used to help make decisions, but in the end are just that - statistics. You are an individual.

Yur Oncologist can h: The most helpful person to you in your battle with lung cancer is your oncologist. You should have a frank conversation with him/her asking questions about prognosis/ long term outlook for you. Not knowing whether your tumor is responding to Erlotinib or not, i may not be able to do justice to address prognosis of your lung cancer. The outcomes do vary among patients with same type/stage of cancer.

Cancer: Concerning the possible metastasis to other organs is unclear but possible and  only god or the powers at be know that answer. Just spend what time you have with your mom and enjoy the present. Hospice and your doctor is very good in helping the patient as well as the family dealing with dying as well as possible cancer developments .  :)

Lung Mass: The masses need to evaluated further by a pulmonologist.  You may need a bronchoscopy and a biopsy to determine the nature of the masses.

Not good: Stage 3b non-small-cell-lung cancer is a very heterogeneous group of patients and as such there is no unanimous hard data on survival, unlike the earlier stages. Some may benefit from chemo- and radiation therapy to shrink the tumor and be resected. My advice is to go to the most renowned lung cancer specialist that is available to you and hope for the best.

Not good: Most patients with stage 4 lung cancer don't survive more than 6 months. But this is of course individual and you should look for the best possible treatment for your father. Good luck!

Limited: If lucky, small lesion, no metastasis, peripheral  in lung, found early by accident!
and removed thoroughly.

If not prognosis is limited, usually 1-2 years max even with best care.
