Lymph node?: Could be a lymph node or abcess or cyst. There are a few possibilities. Watch to see if any change in size. Don't touch. See if resolves on its own. May take several weeks

Sounds innocent: You probably just have a small pimple or cyst in the skin of your neck.  I would refrain from squeezing it again.  If it does not resolve in a few weeks, you should see your physician and may need referral to a surgeon for excision.

Benign cyst: This is probably a benign sebaceous cyst or ingrown hair in your neck. Use hot soaks on it 2-3 times a day and it will resolve. If not, it may need to be removed surgically.

Tender lump: Tender lump under skin is usually a swollen lymph node or an infected sweat gland. Rarely is it due to a mass/tumor. See you MD as this could be a virus (ie, mono) or other issue depending on your risks.

Look for nits: Lice {common in schools today) cause swelling of occipital lymph nodes (back of neck). But this can also be due to a small sore on the scalp. Nits are small rounded flakes that stick to individual hairs and are the lice eggs. Look for them, they can be combed out with a fine tooth comb.

Lymph nodes: Good = movable, soft, variable size.   Concerning = hard, red, tender, fixed, and progressively larger.   Probably has a normal lymph node.   They are located everywhere In The body.   In the back of the head at the base of the skull there are lymph nodes in both sides.   See your doctor and let him follow it with you.

what are the tiny, finger-tip size lumps that have developed (i believe slowly) right underneath skin on neck?

Accepted Answer

Get evaluated: This may be lymphadenopathy- enlarging nodes- from infection or malignancy.  Especially if there is family history, neurofibromatosis is consideration.  Best to see your physician to sort this out.
