See a dentist ASAP: Without seeing the lump to learn its exact location, color, as well as (important!) x-ray films, only general observation can be listed. This means yours may be completely different. With that being said, many lumps--hard or soft--are often signs of infection. The tooth may be infected with cavity bacteria, or rotting of dead nerve if the tooth has been dead. It may suggest the root has fractured.

Check out the lump!: It sounds like this problem has been going on for some time and it will not get better on its own!  at this point the lump is telling you that the decay in the tooth is spreading, and needs to be addressed if you are going to be able to save the tooth and stop the infection from spreading further.  It may already be too late to save the tooth, but you don't want the infection to ruin the bone.

Any abnormality in your mouth that lasts beyond 7-10 days needs to be examined by a dentist.

Abcess: Yes. Sometimes the infection will drain towards the gums and create the "bump" you referred to.  Other times the infection stays in the jawbone and does not drain to the outside.
