Suggesting: An inflamed lymph node or adenopathy, but a medical exam should clarify. Inflamed lymph nodes may persist indefinitely following local infections and are relatively common. Seeing your doc in follow up should help.

Cyst vs node: If this is a persistent problem, your physician can determine whether this is a branchial cleft cyst or an enlarged lymph node.  If it is hard, gets fixed to the surrounding tissues, or continues to grow after 2 weeks, be sure to see your physician to rule out something serious but treatable, such as hodgkin's.  Good luck.

Likely lymph nodes: These are most likely appropriate lymph nodes along the chain of lymph nodes and lymphatic vessels that drain the ear area. There is little soft tissue under the skin so the nodes stick out. He should be seen if they become very tender, hot to touch, get bigger very fast, or fluid starts coming out. If they already are bigger than the last part of your pinky he should also be checked.

If the lump is on the side of the neck it may be a lymph gland resulting from a old or upper respiratory infection. Again see your doctor for further evaluation.
