Depends: Depending on your age, you could be describing a vascular problem affecting superficial vessels at the base of the head.  A few urgent blood tests are probably warranted.  If you are also experiencing eye pain, go to the ER.  If not, consider calling your primary doctor tomorrow.

Lymph node: The most likely answer is a swollen lymph node. Acne at the hair line or an upper respiratory infection can cause the lymph nodes at the base of the skull and neck to capture infection and swell. The surrounding neck muscles that insert into the skull spasm due to the swollen lymph node and cause tension headaches. If the symptoms persist then see your medical doctor.

i've had a headache for 4 days and it's on the lower left side of my head, what's wrong?

Hard to say: In the abscence of any neurological symptoms such as weakness, numbness, speech problems, it is hard to say that there is a mass lesion in the brain such as a tumor. However, if the headaches do not improve, you should check with your doctor. He may want to do some imaging study such as an MRI scan.

Neuralgia: Your location may fit the anatomy of the greater occipital nerve, and could be a problem coming from where the neck and base of skull come together.  Alternatively, this may be referred pain from neck arthritis.
Focal occipital headaches may also be seen in thoracic outlet syndrome.  Get a physical exam and then appropriate therapy.

Midface migraine: Although migraine is usually considered a headache, it can also present as pain in the teeth, jaw and/or the maxillary sinus which often confuses the diagnosis. When this presentation occurs, it is referred to as facial or midface migraine. These patients do not have a primary complaint of headache. Instead, they may experience throbbing pain in ear , jaw  and side head.

Head and neck pain: Pain is non specific, neck pain from neck muscle spasm, cervical spine diseases can radiate up to the head and ear on the same side. Try ibuprofen, warm compress to neck, see neurologist if no improvement.

i have severe headaches, back of head, lower right side.  sometimes after too much alcohol, sometimes no trigger?  the pain can last for days.  help.

Needs investigation : You need to check with your pcp, who should check your medical history, family history and any risk factors. You will possibly need ct or MRI brain to rule out any organic pathology. You also may have some withdrawal headache from the alcohol, or tension headache. It's important to know what alleviates the headache and what makes it worse as well.

Family practice. : It his hard to say. If you have a stiff neck and enlarged lymph nodes it could be a sign of infection. Get this checked out.
