Several things: This is one of those problems where a visit to your doctor is necessary to figure out what's going on.  Only after a thorough evaluation, including examination and possibly labs and other tests, can your doctor correctly diagnose you and treat you effectively.

i have a very hard knot on lower right rib on my back side that's been there 20 plus years. now have some periodic uncomfortable swelling around it.

Important: Any change in a swelling that has been there for a long time is always of concern. You need to see a physician quickly who may have to additional tests like ct or MRI followed by a biopsy. The examination may also reveal an entirely benign swelling that does not need any more intervention.

swelling is squishy not hard. could this be fat ?

It could be: It is also possible it could be a little benign fatty growth called a lipoma. Either way, it is likely not something you need to worry about. Keep an eye on it, though. If it continues to enlarge or becomes tender or discolored, it will then be something you want to bring to the attention of your doctor. Stay well:)

Ans: Did you have trauma to this area perhaps years ago?  Sounds like some calcification from old trauma. See your doctor for exam

Injury: A painful swelling at that location is usually a muscle injury or a bruise, probably incurred during basketball.Your doctor would know for sure.

Could be . . .: Bronchitis could last for a while usually with these symptoms.  However it could also be an allergy problem with post nasal drip and frequent throat clearing.  The rib pain could be because you are coughing so frequently that your rib muscles are in spasm.  You should see a physician to be diagnosed properly.

pain-left middle armpit along rib bones to nipple line. 3 times dealing with this a year. started lower ribs/lung moving up. hurts to breathe, sit/lay down or getting up, coughing is almost unbearable. knots/swelling. no breaks?

: Not enough information but you should start with a visit to your doctor. Fever? Night sweats? Previous infection? Short of breath? Description brings to mind pleurisy but impossible to say without more information, history, and exam
