May be better choice: Taking narcotics for acute pain is not "bad".  There may be better choices, though.  2 vicodins contains up to 1000 mg of tylenol (acetaminophen) so you have to be careful not to exceed 3000 mg per day for nl adult size.  It also has hydrocodone which is possibly addicting.  Try regular tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen.  You may also benefit from a Medrol dose pack.  Talk to your doctor who knows your history and your exam.

Core strength: The long-term fix, as long as there are no significant problems with the back, to back spasms is a strong core. In addition to strengthening your core, use good form when lifting objects and doing exercise. Add volume and intensity of exercise with common sense. If you have concerns that you have a problem with your back, such as a herniated disc or a degenerative spine, see your doctor.

Yes: Typically yes it will make spasms worse. Take a break until spasms have subsided then start lifting again but at a lower weight. Work your way slowly back to your goal weight. Stretch well before any exercise.

Advil (ibuprofen) and heat: You should try advil or Aleve (naproxen) and heat to the area.  If not better see your physician.

See below: In general no bed rest unless pain is really severe.  It is best to lay on whatever is most comfortable.  Get up and do as much as you can.  General rule of thumb is that if it hurts a little it is ok, but do not go to extremes and use good body mechanics.  Try to keep one foot on a stool or rest. Do not stay in one position too long. If it really hurts don't do it. Time cures this.

received deep tissue massage to lower back for muscle spasm. now i have bruises on lower back from the massage - should i be concerned ?

Sounds deep.....: certainly consult your masseuse. Deep tissue massage should not leave bruising. The ongoing use of Advil and Aleve (naproxen) may contribute to your issues.
