Yes: Most disc herniations heal with conservative care.  Once they have healed, there still may be changes seen in future imaging.  However, if it is not symptomatic, there is no reason that you cannot resume normal activities.  Check out spine-health.Com.

McKenzie: Some exercise approaches include swimming, stretching, williams, and mckenzie protocols.  Feldenkreis may help some patients, and careful pilates may be useful.  A quality physical therapist may be marvelous.

Depends: It depends upon the severity of your injury. If you had a disc protrusion that caused radiculopathy but not weakness the recovery may be faster if you do PT and take your medicine. If you experienced weakness, you may need surgery and have a different recovery period. Nobody can quote you a generic timetable without knowing specifics its speculative. In general one expects a 2-3 months, 8-12 weeks

how often is it necessary to have disc fusion surgery, and how dangerous is it? i've recently been told that i need to have my lower back disc's fused, i'm curious as to the risks involved with surgery

Accepted Answer

The : The risks depend on your age, health, number of other medical disorders you have, the type of fusion surgery being done (anterior, lateral, posterior, tlif) and the number of levels being fused.  The general risks of spine surgery include death, stroke, heart attack, pneumonia, blood clots in your legs, great vessels and lungs, infection, bleeding, allergic reactions, skin breakdown, nerve damage (causing pain, numbness, weakness, paralysis, bowel and bladder incontinence), failure of fusion (increased by smoking), breakage of the hardware (screws and rods, etc), and increased wearing out at the levels above and below the fusion (the movement that was lost at the fused area must be taken up at the mobile levels around that area and may cause those areas to wear out more quickly), worse pain, but not limited to these complications. Symptoms: What are your symptoms? Often symptoms may include low back or leg pain that is burning, sharp, radiating, or tingling. Certain positions can exacerbate the symptoms.

Pain in back and leg: Usually this involves pain in the back that radiates to leg.  You should be seen by a pain doctor to workup your symptoms.  You can get an MRI to make definitive diagnosis.  At your age, don't push yourself too hard if you are having pain.

is it easy to confuse lower back disc and kidney pain?

Yes and no: Low back pain is more spread out. It's not as sharp and specific as kydnet pain. I personally have had kidney stones and the pain is excruciating and very sharp. Nevertheless, they both can be similar and difficult to distinguish at times.

Back pain: There is no right or wrong answer -- find a position of comfort and try to stick with that -- an adjustable mattress may be of some help.

i have ddd, on 4 lower back discs and i was advised to not crack the back. i've since notice a grating sound whenever i rotate my pelvis, and cracking sound after walking. sometimes this even alleviates low grade pain. should i be concerned?

Accepted Answer

: Not necessarily a concern. You're apparently manipulating your spinal joints in and out of position creating a grating sound and relieving pressure in your spine while doing the maneuvers. I think your orthopedic specialist would agree with this analysis.
