The pathologist evaluates the characteristics of the cells to establish the presence of abnormalities which range from mild dysplasia to cancer.  Pap smear should be supplemented with testing for hpv.

Yes: Patients can refuse to have a test done.  The question would be why?  Pap tests are the most effective cancer screen available.  They have dramatically decreased the incidence of cervical cancer.  I would be curious to know the concern.

Don't worry: You will be asked to undress and placed into a gown. They will have you lay on the exam table and place your legs in sturips. The doctor will sit between your legs and use a speculum, a device to help view your cervix, and insert it into the vagina. Although uncomfortable, hopefully not by much and brief. Once the cervix is seen, a sample is taken with a small brush.

Cervical cancer test: The Pap smear is a test to screen for cervical cancer. More commonly,,precancerous changes are are what we find and then treat to reduce the risk for cervical cancer. Recent Guidlines do NOT recommend PAP smears in women under 21 years old. Rather, this age group need preventive care, including the a HPV vaccine and testing for STDs.

6 weeks at earliest.: Because of the amount of inflammation that occurs as the cervix and uterus are healing and returning to normal after a delivery (vaginal or cesarean section) you should wait at least six weeks before having a pap smear. Normally your obstetrician will perform one no sooner than 12 months after your last pap smear or in 3-6 months if you have had abnormal paps.

No: A pap test looks for cervical cancer. If you had a full hysterectomy, it means you don't have a cervix and therefore can't get cervical cancer and you don't need a pap test. You will however need a pelvic exam, becuase that checks our pelvis and ovaries, which you will still have after a hysterectomy.
