Too little intake: The body maintains stores of vitamin d in the fat cells.  It takes a long time for a deficiency to develop, and a long time to correct it using typical over-the-counter supplements.  People normally get vitamin d from sun exposure and a few food sources (liver, eggs)  as people have moved indoors and don't eat as much eggs & liver, vitamin d deficiency has become more common.

Vit D &amp; parathyroid: You need vit D to absorb calcium in the gut. But if you're not absorbing calcium, why is it high? It could be an overactive parathyroid.  Other causes can be certain medications, such as HCTZ.  Your dad probably needs to take Vit D, but it should be done under the supervision of an MD who deals with calcium disorders, usually an Endocrinologist, or sometimes Nephrologist.

Vitamin D deficient: Deficiency of vitamin D will elevated the parathyroid hormone level. The phosphorus elevation is minimal. You need to address why you are vitamin D defricient, consider supplementing more than you are doing already, or if you're on a good oral dose, consider whether your "irritable bowel" might be lipid malabsorption. Get yourself a healthy amount of sunlight. Best wishes.

how serious is it to have low vitamin d levels?  my blood test showed 18 vit d, but my doc said to ignore that bc calcium level is normal.  true?

Unfortunately: No! a level of 18 is disastrous since it needs to be between 60 and 80. Vit d is made in the skin by exposure to sunlight. We now know that it is needed by every cell in the body. It affects everything, not just bone metabolism. If taking a supplement it should be a huge dose like 10000 units a day for several weeks or months and then get it checked again. There is a lot of new info about d.

This is often seen: in fair complected people and may be a pre-cursor to Vit D Deficiency....you need NUTRITIONAL COUNSELING!

Hypercalcemia: Calcium Lvels are VERY HIGH. Need HOSPITALIZATION to bring down Calcium levels specially if she is confused and symptomatic. iPTH can also be checked, Get CT scan of NECK and Chest as well. But bottom line is that HYPERcalcemia at this level must be investigated soon.

: No, they are independent levels. Many individuals with normal calcium levels have vitamin D deficiency.

Many: What is your PTH and phosphorus levels and the serum albumin level ? Further testing is needed to determine what is driving the high normal calcium. Are you on medications including calcium pills or tums (calcium carbonate)? The labs should be repeated. I am assuming your vitamin d25 is low that is not unexpected where we live. Talk to your MD.

: Vitamin D levels are not included in a Comprehensive metabolic panel and must be ordered separately. Since most persons are deficient in Vitamin D, the result may help you Dr recommend a supplementation level for you.

Hard to tell: Is your calcium low normal or high normal?  From the labs above, the only thing i can say right now is you have secondary hyperparathyroidism due to the low vitamin d.  The best thing to do right now is to correct the vitamin d into the normal range (30-50).  Once this is done, the PTH should drop back into the normal range.  If not, then you also have primary hyperparathyroidism.
