32 y.o. female, over the last 5 yrs my platelet count have gotten low. i take iron daily but if i don't they will get low quick. what can cause this?

Huh?: I suspect you mean red blood cells as they are dependent upon adequate iron stores for production and are often low in menstruating and birthing females.  If you are not symptomatic and degree of anemia is mild I do not see you should be worried.  It might make sense to use an ocp to help control menstrual loss. Red meats are a great source of iron. Take your iron with an acid juice or vit c.

: No, Vitamin D has no relationship with Platelet count.
If your ethnicity is not white, vitamin D level is considered normal.
On general, vitamin D level is between 30-100 but that is not race based. Most black people has D level less than 20 and Asian or Hispanic people in America have D level less than 30 if they are not taking D supplement.
Per ACIM, vitamin D level above 20 is normal.

High platelet count: Can be associated with iron deficiency anemia, which could lead to lightheadedness.  Hypoglycemia also a possibility but more evaluation would be needed to sort all this out.

Life Threatening: Yes.  A platelet count that low is life threatening. Prednisone is often part of the emergency treatment to protect your life.

Check again: Often blood cell abnormalities come and go for a variety of reasons.   I would recommend you see your pediatrician or family doctor and have your child thoroughly examined.  A normal exam will be very reassuring.    I would also repeat the blood tests in a week or two and compare.   I would also talk to the doctor about diet and vitamins for the B12 deficiency.

: It's ideal for a patient with a history of lung cancer to be followed by a team of doctors, including a pulmonologist, thoracic surgeon, an oncologist and a cardiologist. In addition, with a history of abnormal hematologic tests, a hematologist should be a member of the team.

Complicated.: This is a great question.  The major worry of platelets being too lowis unexplained bleeding into the head, which can be very serious.  This risk is present at different levels for different patients.  It depends on quite a bit of variables: age, recent injury, other illnesses, current bleeding, chance of platelet recovery, etc.  Clearly if there is troublesome bleeding, they are too low.

Thrombocytopenia: It means  you could be easily. There are different levels of low platelets. Depending on how low, your overall health, your medications,  comorbid medical condition your doctor will determine the proper treatment. Normal level is >150, 000. Most people don't have problems if above  100, 000.  Below 100, 000 needs more attention.

The production sites in the bone marrow can be invaded & shut down as in leukemia.
