Find why: If this is a sign of iron deficiency, you're seriously sick and must find the cause. If it's a sign of thalassemia minor, I'm glad you finally found out. There are other possibilties. Get with your physician and sort it out.

Insist on an answer: If you're mildly or not anemic and your RBC count is a bit high, you probably have thalassemia minor which is a non-problem unless you marry someone else who has it. If your RBC count is also lowish and/or you're seriously anemic, you're likely to be iron deficient. There are other possibilities. Your physician needs to explain. Best wishes.

hello. i am a 27 year old male. i recently had my blood work done, and i found out that while my hemoglobin level is normal (14.2 g/dl), my mcv and mch are low (mcv= 69.8 fl. mch = 23.3 pg). mchc is normal too (33.3%). is this normal or dangerous?

i recently got a blood test done and it says i have a low mcv value, does it mean i have thalassemia? also i have high blood glucose levels.

Incomplete info: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Having said that, it would have helped to have all the results including MCV value. Also need Hb level, and tests for iron. To make a diagnosis of thalassemia, would need Hb electrophoresis too.

Anemia: An otherwise healthy 30 year-old female can get pretty iron deficient just from normal menstrual blood loss. Your anemia is "microcytic and hypochromic", which is what the low MCV and MCHC is saying. The most common cause for that is iron deficiency and can be easily corrected.
