The latter...: Patients with severe symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome may develop vitamin b-12 deficiency due to problems with food intake, digestion and absorption. Some patients with ibs may not tolerate dairy products and meat products leading to less b-12 intake. Ibs also causes chronic diarrhea which leads to loss of other vitamins and minerals too.

Need more info: Your past medical history is important. Also need to know if you have been out of the country. There are so many illnesses that cause these symptoms I would suggest that you make an appointment with your family physician ASAP.

Trial and error: Since this has been a problem, you probably know which foods are triggers for your IBS.  Frequently, these include caffeine, tobacco, lactose, fructose, gluten, legumes. Loperamide is an otc anti-diarrheal agent that can help to decrease pain and urgency as well.  Let your doctor know if you begin using it.

IBS diarrhea: Diarrhea in ibs can be treated with imodium, Lomotil and lotronex (alosetron). Lotronex (alosetron) has restricted use as it can cause ischemic colitis   usually occurs in elderly people with heart condition.  It is good medication when properly prescribed.             One must make sure that there is no coexisting lactose intolerance celiac disease or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth or microscopic colitis.

IBS is highly associated with Joint Hypermobility Syndrome (JHS) and sacroiliac joint subluxation disorder. If chronic low back pain is associated, then see an Osteopath.  JHS is the "Great Masquerader"; even highly associated with fibromyalgia.
