: Neither. All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. Having said that, it would have helped had you described your symptoms and actual lab results, not high/low.    Wish you good health!

Infection: Giardiasis and certain viral diarrheal illnesses. Giardia infection of the small intestine can cause decreased absorption of nutrients and may be mistaken for gluten enteropathy. Surprisingly patients with low IgA do not have a higher frequency of food allergy. That's giardia in the photo.

Reason for testing: What was the reason for testing to start with?   were you suspecting some kind of immune problem? Repeat the test in another lab first before judging, selective IgA deficiency is not uncommon, and not dangerous, many people do have it with normal healthy life, check with an allergist/Immunologist for better understanding, check aaaai.org or acaai.org for an allergist in your area, take care

Not entirely true: Some child experiences transient hypogammaglobulinemia involving all classes of immunoglobulins, not just iga.  Selective IgA deficiency is very common affecting 1 in 500 individuals, a good number of them are asymptomatic though.

Hypoimmuneglobulinem: First question to you is: why your one year old was diagnosed with low immunoglobulins? Next question is: how is he being treated? Is he receiving IV igg? Now lastly, is he under care of a pediatric immunologist in an academic institute?

Question vague: There are a subset of the population that doesn't make much IgA, and they often have recurrent nose/ear/diarrheal infections in their lifetime. It is more a nuscience than a treatable condition. The reading could also be a lab error.

Yes: Low IgA levels may be seen in a multitude of issues, however, selective IgA deficiency is the more common one (other causes include medication induced...)  siga def is an "immunodeficiency" that can lead to increased infections and other problems in some people.  However, some people have no symptoms at all!  the low ige is probably less relevant.  See an immunologist!

True.....: and there is a pretty wide range on IgA in the normal category. There is a specific disease when the IgA is ZERO, but :"low" is not "zero" and "low" is not associated with significant problems.

and yes, stress (especially day/night shift changes) alter hormones and might reasonably lower IgA levels.

No: This would not have accounted for your symptoms.  Make sure you get a lung function test to find out whether asthma is the only cause for your breathing impairment . Another remote possibility is a drug reaction from the many drugs you have been taking to control your autoimmune disorder. If your rheumatologist can't help you, get a 2nd opinion.

More info needed: The question asked can be intreperted in many ways. Normally these are levels in relation to a disease. A high IGM means recent infection, a high IGE means something allergic is bothering you and low  IGG means less memory antibodies for an old infection. Low IGA is antibody for your gut/intestines. Hopefully this helps. See your doctor for more answers.
