both my twins have low homocysteine blood test results they are now 17. the rest fe is 6-10 they have historically been at 3.5 one twin is finally at 5. im concerned bout this and cant seem to find much info re low homocysteine levels?

: All laboratory results need to be interpreted in the clinical context and the doctor who ordered the tests is usually in the best position to do that. Talk to the doctor who ordered the tests. No: Ideal homocysteine is 5-7. You are actually a hair high. Test b12, b6, folate (folic acid). If any low, supplement with homocysteine factors. If all normal, consider testing for mthfr.

Big picture please: As a lab doctor, this means nothing in isolation. I appreciate your caring & this is no familiar pattern. Is the person clinically healthy? How off are the values? Vegetarians and junk-fooders are equally at risk for high homocysteine as are folks with genetic disease. Bilirubin -- gilbert's? Platelets -- gin and tonic? This isn't something to discuss in a 400-character text thx 4 understanding.

Folate (folic acid) dieficiency: Would be uncommon in an 18 yo.  A B12 level between 200 and 400 can be difficult to interpret.  Under 200 clearly low and over 400 likely ok.  In between is a grey area.

Yes (and no) : Most labs give a normal homocysteine level of up to 15. However, many studies have shown that once your homocysteine goes over 9, your are at increased risk for heart disease, and other problems associated wth homocysteine elevation. Homocysteine can be lowered by certain b vitamins like folate, (folic acid) b-6, b-12 and trimethylglycine. Hypothyroidism can also raise homocysteine levels.

Micromoles / liter: This is low-end of the reference range. Most of the pathology community doesn't think screening for homocysteine levels is worth the cost or the inconvenience, but in our era of defensive medicine, it gets done a lot. The only concern is if it's high, and even then nobody really knows what to do about it other than eat sensibly, which folks should do anyway. Relax and be glad for good health.

No: It does not. It doesn't cause premature arteriosclerosis either, but it once was believed that it does.

Accepted Answer

No: Not dangerous, just one of many risk factors for developing coronary disease at a later time.  Try to improve the risk factors you can with a healthy diet, not smoking, knowing you cholesterol, and treating if needed, and maintaining a healthy weight.  Do not smoke!  Homocysteine levels can be lowered with certain b vitamins, but the benefit of this treatment is uncertain.

Could be mistake but: Whenever a lab test does not make sense a mistake is possible, but it's equally possible the level of 8 from 2 years ago was a mistake! Get it retested; if still elevated I advise Methyl-Guard by Thorne or a similar product formulated to lower homocysteine.

Yes: Your homocysteine level is elevated. There are many causes of such elevation and some may corrected on taking Folic Acid and b12. Homocyteine is one of the risk factors for heart disease.
