Probable viral: laryngitis: voice rest, warm water gargles, zinc lozenges like Cold-Eze or Zicam, dark brown honey  on a spoon or in tea.

You probably: have acute laryngitis, assuming you have no other problems. There is no medicine that would help.  It will take 2 weeks to resolve.  You can help with absolute voice rest and humidifying air.  If it persists, see your doctor because it could be something more serious.

: If you are experiencing a worsening sore throat with additional symptoms, it would behoove you to obtain a throat culture to evaluate possible strep throat.  An Urgent Care Center could assess what you require.

Fluid + voice rest: Seemingly u got laryngitis, often from viral illness and resolves on its own. The virus/coughing inflammed the vocal cords, hence the hoaresness. Warm fluids, voice rest (cord rest), motrin, cough meds etc..For a few days..If u need to talk, don't whisper because whispering actually worsens it--it vibrates vocal more. So, rest your voice..
If lasting more then 1-2 wks, consult doc..

Laryngitis: You likely have developed laryngitis, which is quite common after a cold. Your voice should return after a few days. There's no particular remedy for it, but drinking plenty of water can help to keep throat hydrated. Some of mine patients like to drink water with a bit of honey and lemon juice. It works wonder on some people.

i have a sore throat like i've swallowed glass and have lost my voice, what can i do to help recovery?

Croup: Sounds like you have croup. Hot liquids will south you. Usually croup is of viral etiology and does not require much management. A short course of steroids helps relieve the symptoms. It lasts only 7-10 days.
Whereas if it lasts longer than that, then it means, secondary bacterial super infection. You will need antibiotics in that circumstance.

i lost my voice yesterday afternoon and now am getting a sore throat should i go to the doctor?

Not necessarily: It appears that you are developing laryngitis (voice box inflammation). In most cases it is caused by a virus and is a self limited disease requiring no major treatment or a visit to doctor. Fever, especially past 3 days, symptoms of choking, drooling, stridor (whistling while taking a breath), shortness of breath must be evaluated promptly as they may be a sign of a life threatening disease.

Laryngitis: Yes, it is possibly viral laryngitis and if you are still smoking you need to stop.  It could also be bronchitis. Both are likely to heal with rest, lots of fluids, voice rest, and time.  If you get a high fever or start coughing up green phlegm you should see your doctor.

Most likely: Stay home and rest. Drink soothing warm liquids and avoid straining your vocal cords by talking.

Cough: You likely have/had a viral infection which can leave you more susceptible to bacterial infections. If symptoms are getting worse instead of better and you continue to cough up blood then go get checked!
