Minimum: The biggest consequence is the need to stop it slowly. As a beta blocker it slows your heart rate. If you stop it cold turkey it can cause rapid heart rate and anxiety.

Weird : Why were you taking Metoprolol succinate twice a day? The whole point is because it's long acting you just need one dose a day. So you were on 100mg a day, now you need 50mg twice a day tartrate. Talk to your doctor.

Metoprolol 500mg: Seems a very high dose unless you mean 50mg.  Every medication has adverse effects however the benefits when the medication is indicated outweighs the adverse effects and when the medication is withdrawn the adverse effects may resolve

Palpitations: What did your holter monitor reveal at the times you experienced palpitations?  Thyroid  function ok? If only occasional single atrial or ventricular premature beats, you may not need any treatment except avoidance of excess caffeine and alcohol and abstinence from nicotine. However, your dose of metoprolol is very mild and I wouldn't worry about taking it long term if it's effective and helpful

Metop Succinate: Metoprolol Succinate would provider longer, and more stable beta blocking effects. Assure you are getting metoprolol succinate, and not tartrate variety (the tartrate variety is shorter acting and requires twice per day dosing).

Lots of options: There are lots of other options for controlling palpitations besides Propranolol and toprol (metoprolol) xl.   Given your history of wpw, however, it requires being careful; sometime these medications can actually make the palpitations worse.  It'd be important to see your electrophysiologist or general cardiologist to try another medication, or consider other treatment options (e.g., ablation therapy).
