Local : Local anesthesia with sedation is an option, though the majority patients require general anesthesia for genioplasty.  It is difficult to get all of the bony and soft tissue structures in the chin numbed adequetly with local anesthetics.  Often, some level of sedation can overcome this difficulty and keep you comfortable during the procedure, but for more involved procedures (like reductions) would require a fairly deep level of sedation which falls more on the spectrum of general anesthesia.  Your anesthesiologist will want to know your medical history and previous experience with anesthesia. If your past trouble has been related to side effects such as nausea, the anesthesia can be tailored accordingly to reduce that risk.  Certainly, minimizing the amount of narcotic pain medicine that you recieve during and after the surgery would reduce that risk.  If you have had more severe or life-threatening reactions to anesthesia, these details would need to be discussed with your anesthesia provider whether you pursue local or general anesthesia.

i'm scheduled for total hip replacement. i've been readin and it seems most prefer local anesthesia. i'd prefer general as i had an adverse reaction to versed (i could feel the pain but not tell the dr) during a small procedure. your opinion of best?

Discuss with: Anesthesiologists during your Preop visit. Local anesthesia refers to injections of anesthetic in the area to numb the nerves, or a spinal block. Versed would not be considered local. It is a mild form of general anesthetic to calm anxiety but does not treat pain. Deeper anesthesia is necessary for total hip replacement.

No: If you drink alot your liver my be used to a higher metabolic rate,  but in general no.

Here are a few: The most common are elevated heart rate, extended numbness, and bruising. There are less well known ones but the commercials on tv have a list of about one hundred that they have a speed reader rattle off for most other drugs, so in general it's pretty safe.

Probably unrelated: These issues you describe are likely unrelated to local anesthesia. Local anesthesias usually wears off in 4-6 hours.

Some discomfort: Any tooth extraction is a surgical procedure. Like any surgicla procedure on any other part of the body there will be some discomfort associated with the procedure once the local anesthesia wears off. Get your prescrptions filled before the procedure.

Should get better!: Any time a needle is inserted, it will cause some tenderness and bruising.  There is an inflammatory response because the body interprets the needle stick as an injury.  Try a heating pad, gentle stretching exercises, and a nonsteroidal pain reliever such as Ibuprofen if your doctor oks it and you have no contraindication such as kidney problems.  It should feel better soon!

Very Different: Local anesthesia involves injection of numbing medication into an area requiring surgery. As the name implies, it is only effective in this local area.  Iv sedation describes the intravenous administration of medication to relax and sedate a surgical patient. These two techniques are complementary to one another and often used together.

Can vary: Depends on the area as well as how the anesthesia was given..Cob be as less as 45 min to as long as 6  to 8 hours.Sometimes anesthesia is given as infiltration ...Sometimes as nerve block which can take longer..Especially for back molars..Also depends on location as well as course of the nerve..
