Accept help: Please seek & accept help from a therapist who is experienced in the treatment of ptsd. The valium you take just covers over symptoms but does help the underlying problem. Take care.

No, but…: both issues, your struggle to cope and the blood in your stool need to be evaluated. In addition, if your girlfriend is not getting therapy for her PTSD, that may be necessary also. You should see your family doctor to determine how to proceed with all of these.

PTSD can be associated with a variety of medical illnesses, such as high blood pressure, heart disease, etc.,due to the constant anxiety, among other problems. Treating the illness is the sufferers best option. It's quite serious.

PTSD: is the psyche's attempt to "cure" itself.  The prognosis depends on how severe and how long one has been dealing w/this.  It is important to find a therapist who specializes in PTSD.  Clinical hypnosis is a tool that can be used.  www.asch.net has a search engine for licensed referrals.  The Body keeps the Score by van der Kolk is a good book about PTSD but may be difficult to read.  Peace.

Complex PTSD: Complex PTSD is a proposed diagnosis to be added to the medical diagnostic system to cover individuals who have had chronic trauma and whose resulting symptoms are different or in addition to typical PTSD.  For example chronic trauma may cause more damage to self-concept, and it may predispose people to more complex and challenging issues with anxiety etc.  Good question!

1st, understand it.: Read all you can at trusted professional sites and & in books. Talk to your doctor & if you know folks who have experience with it, see what they have to say. Ptsd has about 3 major factors in it's history; physical, emotional & sexual trauma or any combination of the three. There are 3 major  interventions; counseling (cbt), medication & strong social support systems. Best results use all three.

Therapy: In most cases ptsd is treated by psychologists with psychotherapy using cognitive-behavior or insight-oriented techniques.  Talking about and through traumas in a safe environment over time helps. If there is concommitent depression or severe symptoms psychiatric consultation and medications are often used in combination with therapy. Some techniques such as emdr remain subject to skepticism.
