Elevated ammonia: For elevated ammonia  lactolose is used as is rifaximin. . it is important ot take medications . With elevated ammonia you get confused, disoriented, slurrign of speech ultimately  lethargic when very high can result in coma.  Hydration and  low protein diet is important as well

Need more info: Hepatic encephalopathy is diagnosed by mental status. If he is confused, disoriented, or abnormally sleepy, probably he has it. High ammonia can help confirm encephalopathy, but by itself doesn&#x27;t make the diagnosis. However, that plus not taking lactulose probably mean he is at high risk for it. Check with his doctor ASAP. Good luck!

Increased ammonia: By the time someone with alcoholic liver disease develops hepatic encephalopathy, cirrhosis of the liver is usually present. If the elevation is only slight and he is asymptomatic, it is possible to have fibrosis without cirrhosis, but he is certainly on his way to it. It is very important not to drink anymore alcohol at all. He also should not drive. He should follow up closely with his doctor.

Cirrhosis: Ammonia is a breakdown product of proteins, and is toxic at high levels.  One of your liver's jobs is getting rid of toxins in your body. If your liver is not working because of cirrhosis, ammonia can build up, among other things. High levels of ammonia can severely effect your central nervous system.

Pre-analytical: Blood ammonia test is the most severely affected by pre-analytical factors, by that I mean, specimen irregularities.  A smoker drawing the blood sample can result in elevated ammonia levels.

Cannot say w/o...: ...Much more history at minimum. However, if mucomyst (acetylcysteine) brings ammonia down and liver given chance to recover, can often improve function. Need to avoid any non-essential taxes to liver function--like alcohol and non-essential drugs/meds. Gi or hepatology (/liver specialist) can help guide management if not rapidly improving.

Need more info: It all depends on your body functions. I think it would be a good idea to ask the physician who prescribed the lactulose.
