No long List: The newer oral nonsedating antihistamines available without prescription in the US are: loratadine (Claritin), fexofenadine (Allegra), cetirizine (Zyrtec) and levocetirizine (Xyzal) . Desloratadine ( Clarinex) is available by prescription. Some of the insurance medication plans will cover some of the above over-the-counter antihistamines.

A few: Antihistamines have been around for many years & many that used to be prescription are now available over-the-counter. A few antihistamines are still prescription, including some first-generation (sedating) medicines like periactin or palgic as well as second-generation (less-sedating) medicines like xyzal (levocetirizine) and clarinex.

Some are, yes.: Looking at receptor inhibition profiles (lab data) we can see that some do indeed block histamine receptors.  Older ones in the tca class (elavil, anafranil, etc), trazodone and even a more modern one like Remeron (mirtazapine) do so which can lead to increased sleepiness and appetite.  As far as potency, they're not as effective as sudafed in fighting a cold.

With what?: If you are thinking about drinking alcohol, do not do it. Antihistamines might potentiate the effect of alcohol.

72 hrs: The biologic effects no longer than 72 hours even though the drug may still be detectable for up to a couple of weeks with certain antihistamines.

Possibly OK.: It probably won't hurt you, but you gotta wonder if it is helping you.  I can imagine combinations of a topical antihistamine, a good general non sedating oral antihistamine, and a traditional sedating antihistamine .

Unlikely: Please define your symptoms from the medications. Theoretically someone can be reacting to a coating on the tablets, but rarely do people react to antihistamines beside the usually sedative side effects.
