few months ago i had cold sores on my lips for the first time. now, i have allergic reactions to lipstick i used regularly. can i still use lipstick?

Lipstick allergy: Allergies can arise at anytime-- the immune system is constantly on the lookout for invaders, so u can kind of understand how this happens. That said, if your lipstick is giving u problems u have to stop using it. There are many ingredients in lipstick- red dyes, lanolin &amp; some even with fish scales! which could explain the specifics of your allergy b/c these are common allergens. Try other brands

: "Cold sores" represent outbreaks of Herpes I or II virus. Treatment is with antiviral meds (acyclovir, Valtrex). These ulcers are communicable, and there is no "preventive cream", etc., to stop emergence.  Taking antivirals when symptoms first appear will decrease the effects sooner.  Stress (emotional, school, work) can activate these viruses to produce the ulcers.

No: Lipstick never reactivates cold sores. Inflammation involving thymidine kinase triggers replication of the virus with recurrent symptoms. This may be a fever, friction, sunburn, others. Oral valacyclovir and acyclovir are very effective if used at prodrome [onset of symptoms].

Little or no risk: HSV1, the oral herpes virus, is not usually transmitted by this sort of contact. Of course you should never share lipstick with anyone, but that's mostly to prevent colds, flu, etc, not herpes. Don't worry about it.

Cold sores are caused by a herpes simplex virus (hsv-1) closely related to the one that causes genital herpes (hsv-2). Both of these herpes simplex viruses can affect your mouth or your genitals, and can be spread via oral sex. The virus can be transmitted to others even during times when you have no blisters.

i went to sephora and apply lipstick with a swab but the second time the lady that work there had a cold sore and see rub the lipstick on hand before getting me another swab. she had no sores on hand i didn't noticed it at first bc of her lipstick?

: Herpes virus from a cold sore is transmitted from skin to skin contact. If the virus was somehow briefly present on that lipstick, it could be transmitted to your skin.  I feel the chances of this happening is very unlikely though and I wouldn't worry much about it.

The severity and length of the outbreak can be reduced using creams such as abreva or oral prescription anti-viral medications such as valtrex (valacyclovir).
