Excise: Lipomatous tumors are benign at inception.  As they grow there is a tendency to transform to a malignant phenotype.  In the extremity if the tumor is painful or larger than 10 cm. it should be excised   In  the retroperitoneum around the fat pad of the kidney, all fatty tumors should be resected.

Yes: Yes it is possible for lipoma to not move as freely if it has been long standing as some fibrotic changes can start happening. As long as it is not dramatically changing in size and starting to cause symptoms, it can be simply monitored. If not it can be removed by a dermatologist and biopsied.

Depends...: A soft tissue mass must be evaluated by a surgeon experienced in recognition of sarcoma and other tumors of the extremity.  A CT scan may be necessary, followed by fine-needle or core-needle biopsy.  The type of biopsy IS important, as a sarcoma requires proper technique to avoid difficulty in complete excision later.

i have a medium size growing painful soft tissue tumor on the out side of my left thigh. it appears to be deep set in my thigh unlike a lipoma. what is it? it is firm to the touch.

Mass: this mass could still be a lipoma, but deeper. In any case, since it is growing and symptomatic, you should probably have it removed. Ask about the need for an MRI or CT scan before removal. Typically, a general surgeon would be the one to do it. Hope this helps!
