hello! about 4 weeks ago i had a 5 day cold with all the common symptoms. a month now ive had a persistent cough that produces green mucus.i feel completely fine besides that. is this normal?could i have had pneumonia and the cough is just lingering?

: Sometimes after an upper respiratory infection, you begin to have bronchospasm from the cough and then the cough continues. You also likely have airway inflammation which will also lead to cough. A bronchodilator inhaler along with a steroid inhaler will likely get the cough to go away. So, see your doctor to get treated. Good luck!

an elderly man had pneumonia & was on abs with signs of improvement warranting cessation of abs. could a lingering infection exist without an acute decline in his condition over the next week? wbc same crp rising again. xrays unclear-pleural effusion

Yes it can: It is indeed possible for a chest infection to continue beyond the course of antibiotics especially if the antibiotic was not the correct choice to begin with. If his CRP is rising then it means ongoing inflammation. It is possible that he is developing pleuritis and a parapneumonic effusion. The best option would be to obtain sputum cultures to see if he warrants another cause of antibiotics

had mild covid pneumonia three and half weeks ago. treated with azithromycin. have lingering dry cough that feels worse now. x-ray showed pneumonia is better, but now have cuffing in upper bronchial area. doc said maybe from irritation from coughing?

: The cuffing may be indicative of smooth muscle constriction. Discuss whether a trial of a bronchodilator and inhaled steroids is indicated. A PEFR test and a home log of readings is often useful in gauging improvement. While symptomatic, a pulmonary function test during COVID-19 is not usually performed due to possible aerosol generating particles.

It may decrease gas : Exchange, causing hypoxemia. Most pneumonia do not cause problem with oxygenation. All have to be treated and get follow up xrays in 4-6 weeks. If you have preexisting lung condition then your gas exchange and oxygenation may be compromised needing aggresive management.

Different vaccine: Except for sore arm, little swelling and redness at the site of injection threr is no serious side effect most of the time.
There may be mild fever, drowsiness, irritability and loss of appetite
rare causes are anaphylaxis due to allergy, headaches, swollen glands, skin rash, seizures, palpitation, swollen glands, wheezing etc.
Pnumonia and flu vaccine are two different vaccines, and not at all similar.

Minimal: The pneumonia vaccine has no more side effects than any other vaccine and is a good way to protect yourself from invasive disease in the lungs should you be infected with pneumococcus.  It is especially important to have it when you have any chronic disease of the airways such as asthma.  There is mild pain at the site of the injection and may be some soreness and redness after the shot.

Symptoms include: The symptoms that can occur include sleep disturbances, tiredness and weight loss. Any chest pain or difficulty breathing should be reported to your physician. If there is inflammation and bronchospasm, inhalers may be prescribed to open the airways.
