Your question is a great one.  Yes indeed you can contract an STD from having oral sex.  In my practice I have treated oral Gonorrhea, Chlamydia , Syphilis and Herpes.  This is why we recommend oral sex with condoms or a  dental damn.  There should always be a barrier between you and a potential STD!

STDs from oral sex: Assuming your partner(s) are male, the main oral STDs by performing fellatio (giving oral sex) are gonorrhea and herpes due to HSV2. HIV, chlamydia and syphlis are possible but much less common. The main risk to you from cunnilingus (oral-vaginal contact) is herpes due to HSV1. Gonorrhea and chlamydia are possible but rarely transmitted by cunnilingus. No significant risk for HIV.

Low risk, not zero: Oral sex is pretty safe -- the overall chance of STD is a lot lower than with unprotected vaginal or anal sex. But the risk isn't zero. If your male partner is at high risk (e.g. lots of other sex partners), the safe thing is to visit a doctor or clinic for an oral swab for STD testing (primarily for gonorrhea and chlamydia). Receptive oral sex: Nope. There is NO HIV risk from receiving oral sex. But, you can get herpes, gonorrhea, HPV, or chlamydia from this act.

No non-STD risk: Other than STDs, no infections or any other medical conditions are likely to be transmitted by oral sex. Even STDs are pretty low risk, but not zero risk. If you've had such exposure to a new or especially high risk partner, see a doctor or clinic for gonorrhea testing (throat swab, not urine) and maybe, in a few weeks, blood tests for syphilis and HIV. Otherwise no worries.
