If you want to rule: Out a blood clot you do a venous duplex which will show you if a clot is present. I am not sure what blood test can do that....

Baker`s cyst: Baker`s cyst will not cause swelling in the leg. The cause of ankle swelling is probably venous insufficiency which is diagnosed with doppler and ultrasound studies. Baker`s cyst discomfort might persist, in which  ace you might consider surgery.

Venous insuficiency: The most common cause of lower leg swelling is incompetent valves in the veins.  Does the swelling reduce with elevation?  Does it reduce over night.  Other causes of swelling relate to the heart , liver, kidneys. If it is the veins then surgical stockings can be ordered.  Ace bandaging is another method of preventing swelling.  Some patients need diuretics.  There are homeopathic treatments.

DVT: Dvt has no reason to cause arrhythmia unless associated with pulmonary embolus. Swelling described could have several causes.Worth getting checked.

Pain or swelling.: A DVT can present as pain, swelling, or both.

Cause &amp; effect.: The swelling is getting worse because of the DVT; when venous blood flow is impaired, the blood pools in the leg (no way to get back to the heart). Ultimately proteins &amp; fluid will leak out and collect. To my knowledge, the amount of swelling has no correlation with the clot getting bigger or moving. Rather, the more extensive the clot initially, the more the leg will swell.

Can take awhile: It can take months. Wearing compression stockings right away will help but it is essential to wear the stockings for at least wo years to help to decrease your chance that the swelling might never go away.

Yes: Pain in calf of leg and a little swelling raises suspicion of a dvt.  Next step should be a non-invasive vascular lab study to detect a clot in the calf veins or higher veins.

Stockings: According to the national blood clot alliance, if you have had a deep vein thrombosis (dvt), it is common to have residual swelling in the leg after the initial treatment. Graduated compression stockings help increase blood flow in the legs and reduce the swelling.

Varies: It can go down in a matter of days to weeks or months or never.  There is a condition call "post phlebiits syndrome" and the leg can be swollen for prolonged periods of time.  I have patients with swelling for years after one or more clots in the veins of the legs.
