I don't know.: Official stats are usually artificial &often misleading. Stats depend on definitions &these criteria are changing all the time. Plus, "learning disability" is a relative term --so many types & levels of severity. My take: 1)a huge # of us struggles w/ learning; 2) schools are overwhelmed by the needs, & rarely meet the need; 3)more funding is only part of the answer; better ed approaches needed.

LD: Ld such as dyslexia, is linked to certain genes that control how the brain developed. It is inherited.

They Can Be: Learning disabilities appear to have some inheritability, such as dyslexia which is difficulty with reading comprehension. This does not mean a child has to have the problem, but suggests that parents need to be alert if there is a problem surfacing.

Specific Learning : Disorder is diagnosed  in school-age children with avg. to &gt; avg. IQ's. Some families have mutant genes for Specific Language Impairment &amp; resultant Reading Disorder &amp; Disorder of Written Expression. Math impairment may be from Non-Verbal Learning Disability, associated with many syndromes, some of which are inheritable. Low birthweight, brain  infections, trauma &amp; trauma are some other causes.

Young: Ld are usually discovered in school where intense learning first is observed by professionals.  In significant cases something is noticed by the parents and pediatrician, and "early intervention" schooling is provided starting at 3 yrs old.  The earlier an LD is treated, the better the long term outcome.

are medications necessary to treat learning disabilities?

Depends on issues: Learning disabilities are seen in some kids with add or adhd (30-40%) & in that context medications for the add may ease tthe work for the ld. The LD itself is more of a faulty wiring issue where the brain has perticular trouble in a specific area like math. There are no LD pills, herbs etc that i know of. Most therapy works at using multiple modalities to bypass any weak areas to gain skills.

Yes: Among many other government mandated suggestions, your general physician has been asked to screen his older patients for early signs of cognitive decline.

Don't always Know: Lds are essentially birth defects. Causes are generally unknown. We do know that substance abuse during pregnancy may cause problems. Also there is a genetic predisposition.
