: Waste ??? They would not line this up like a blood donation where it is easy to match &amp; many can use the same unit. Matches are difficult to come by &amp; the procedure only set up if they have someone in need. I would say that someone is a jerk who has little understanding of what they are talking about.

The risk of: long term pain following bone marrow aspiration is small...seemingly less than 1-2%. It is done when high iron levels are detected to diagnose whether this is due to hemochromatosis (a hereditary condition of excess iron absorption) or some other blood condition such as anemia, myeloma, etc. Excess iron levels, which often go undetected, can cause liver and heart damage and other serious problems.

Internal bleeding...: can be very significant with a broken bone. This is a primary reason for "reducing" (realigning) and splinting a fracture. Surgery may be needed if the break can't otherwise be stabilized. A broken femur, in particular, can cause massive bleeding into the thigh. Days later the blood may show up as purple, green, or yellow bruises on the skin. Spilled marrow is less of a problem.

my dad had prostrate cancer and had laser surgery to remove it . now  the doctors want to  see if the cancer went to the bone marrow.. is this normal practice?

Normal to check: It is not uncommon to stage the cancer by making sure there has been no extension to bone. A bone scan will tell them if there has been any spread. This sets the baseline and can be used in the future to follow any possible recurrence of his cancer and may help determine how to best treat it now.
